Upcoming Events

Thursday September 4th:  BBQ

The Chapter will be holding a barbeque to kick off the semester from 5-7pm, Thursday September 4th on the lawn west of Wagar.  There will be free burgers and hotdogs for all, so bring a friend and enjoy!

Wednesday September 10th:  Wayne Hybert

Wayne Hubert, head of the University of Wyoming Cooperative Research Unit, and current Vice President of the American Fisheries Society (National), will speak on the values of student interactions with AFS.  Wayne is a well respected professional in the field of fisheries, and this meeting will be a great chance for fisheries students to learn about the values of being a member of this organization.  The meeting will begin at 5pm and last until 630pm in room 232 of Wagar, with free pizza and soda.

This Semester

For the Fall 2008 Semester, the Fisheries Society will be holding bi-weekly meetings as usual.  We will also be holding a barbeque to kick off the semester in the first couple weeks of class.  Several volunteers will be participating in a stream survey to assess species composition and abundance at the Meadow Springs Ranch, north of Fort Collins for the city of Fort Collins.  This will be a great semester, so get involved!

Our Mission

The mission of the American Fisheries Society is to improve the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries professionals.

The Colorado State University Student Chapter of the American Fisheries Society is a nonprofit, student run organization. Officially, we are a sub-unit of the Colorado Wyoming Chapter and national organization of the American Fisheries Society. The purpose of the Society is to broaden the minds of students about the fisheries profession, advance fisheries science, and conserve fisheries resources. Both undergraduate and graduate students that attend meetings can meet experts in every area of fisheries and aquatic biology, and acquire information about academic and professional opportunities.

Becoming involved with the American Fisheries Society is an excellent opportunity to meet new people with the same interests. AFS members can participate in exciting events including habitat restoration projects, group fishing trips, the annual College Lake fishing derby, snorkeling local river systems, the Colorado/Wyoming AFS meeting, and community events.  AFS BYLAWS

Student Resources

Recently, AFS members have begun offering a tutoring service to all students in fishery biology classes. Students that have taken upper level courses and graduate students involved in AFS offer expertise in paper and resume writing, computer programs, and study methods. Every Tuesday and Thursday during the academic semester from 6-8pm in 6 Wagar, students can find help in a variety of areas. We offer assistance with proofreading, lab reports, studying or tests, resume and cover letter writing, and more!
