RESEARCH TECHNICIANS NEEDED FOR INVENTORYING WHITE-TAILED PRAIRIE DOGS



Job Description:  The Technician II and 1 Technician I will determine ownership and permission to visit 320 plots (500 x 500 m) randomly distributed within the range of white-tailed prairie dogs in northwestern Colorado from 15 January and 15 February through March.  Technicians then primarily will use GPS units to locate and visit 320 plots twice to determine presence/absence of prairie dogs.  Primary data collected will include date, time, temperature, wind speed, number of mounds, and number prairie dogs observed from all 4 corners of plots.  Project supervisors will estimate occupancy rates using the maximum likelihood approach of MacKenzie et al. (2002: Ecology 83:2248-2255).  The technician II will also assist with logistics and data management.  Additional duties may be assigned during the project.

Duration
:  Technician II position from 15 January through about 30 July 2008; 1 Technician I position from 15 February through about 30 June 2008; and 4 Technician I positions from about 20 March through about 30 June 2008.

Salary:  Technician II: about $15.00/hour; Technician I: about $13.00/hour.

Location:  Technician II and 1 Technician I: Fort Collins and Northwestern Colorado; Other 4 Technicians: Northwestern Colorado.

Residency:  State of Colorado residency is not required.

Lodging:  Provided while working in the field in Northwestern Colorado.

Vehicles:  Provided.

Qualifications:  Past experience working on research projects, and a B.S. degree in a wildlife related field is preferred.  Candidates should have experience driving 4 x 4 vehicles, and must possess a current drivers license.  Applicants must possess map reading skills and have experience operating a GPS unit.  Attention to detail is essential.  Knowledge of prairie dog behavior and ecology is a plus.
